I passed the MAPR Hadoop Developer Certification Exam on Oct 2nd, 2015 and wanted to share my experience with exam and preparation so others can benefit.
MapR Technologies, Inc.,provider of the top-ranked distribution for Apache™ Hadoop® offers FREE online on-demand Hadoop training courses for developers, data analysts and administrators. The curriculum provides engaging and interactive video lessons, hands-on exercises, labs and quizzes, enabling professionals to acquire valuable Hadoop skills and knowledge. Visit MAPR Training Academy page or this site for the available online training courses. Thanks to the MAPR team for making these courses available to us. All you would need is sign up with MAPR Academy site, browse the course, register and start learning! Check if the company you work for is already a MAPR Certified Consulting Partner in which case you may get certification fee discounts. I got a discount code and paid $0 for certification exam as my employer is MAPR consulting partner and a certification drive was ongoing. Preparation : For preparation of MAPR Hadoop Developer Certification, I registered for "HDE 100 - Hadoop Essentials" & "DEV 301 - Developing Hadoop Applications" courses. HDE 100 is an introductory level course about big data, Hadoop and the Hadoop ecosystem of products. DEV 301 covers how to write MapReduce applications, debugging, managing jobs, improving performance, working with different data sources, managing workflows, and using other programming languages for MapReduce. Both these courses are essential and help in exam preparation. Unlike Cloudera and Hortonworks distributions, the MAPR Hadoop developer certification exam does not cover PIG and Hive related questions. While you can learn them on your own but not required for this certification exam. I scanned through the following reference material in doc.mapr.com/MAPR blog and found them very useful in understanding concepts explained in videos : MAPR Overview MapReduce API (Mapper, Reducer, I/O flows, Recorder Reader, I/O key value pair) How to write MapReduce programs (Mapper class, Reducer class, Driver class, launch hadoop job, examine output) File Compression Using non-java programs for MapReduce jobs (MapReduce streaming, data flow in streaming jobs, Linux commands in streaming, Configure field separator, monitoring and debugging MapReduce jobs) Hadoop Job execution framework MRV1 MRV2 (Hadoop job scheduling, difference between MRv1 & MRv2, MapReduce job lifecycle, launching job in MRv2, MAPR Direct shuffle work flow in YARN, Job history server) Manage/Launch MapReduce Jobs (Manage multiple jobs, Job control object, Mapper & Reducer job chaining, Oozie overview, DAG, Oozie workflow) Managing, Monitoring, and Testing MapReduce Jobs - Managing Jobs and Tasks (Monitor MRv1 jobs, tracking status of launched jobs, view history of job, stopping a launched job, logging information) Managing, Monitoring and Testing MapReduce Jobs (how to work with counters - file system counters, job counters, framework counters) I also downloaded the MAPR sandbox on my MAC to follow along the lab. Could not complete all the questions but tried whatever I could. It is not mandatory to complete lab exercises before exam. Lab is good for practice, may help in understanding the concepts and hands-on. Based on my experience, you can appear and pass the exams as long as you have gone through the videos/training material thoroughly and understood the concepts. Pre-requisites and instructions to download and configure the MAPR sandbox can be found here. I spent over 5 weeks in preparation, maintained notes while going through the videos/MAPR blogs which helped me with revisions. Since I had prior understanding of Apache Hadoop it did not take much time understanding MARP version of the Big data solution architecture. However, preparation time may vary from person to person. Scheduling exam: 3 weeks into preparation gave me some confidence and that is when I started thinking to schedule my exams. Registered and paid ($0 in my case) for MAPR Certified Hadoop Developer Certification on MAPR Academy site. Scheduled exam for Friday (I was off this day). Instructions to register and schedule certification exam given here. Ensure you have a laptop with web cam and schedule such a time when at home/quite place with no one around in the room. Exam would be proctored online via web cam. Probably, a good idea to schedule over weekend. Exam : I logged in the exam-local site and could see a launch button 15 min before the exam time. After clicking the launch button, exam application asked me for web and desktop screen sharing access. Web cam was activated. I could see a chat window and the online proctor asked to show valid Govermentt ID. He also asked me to show him the room and the desk where I was sitting. After reviewing all these he initiated the exam. Questions were multiple choice. I got 71 questions to complete in 120 mins. Few of the questions were direct & few were tricky and time taking. You do not need to write code, but a code snippet could be part of the question or answer. You have the provision to MARK the questions you would want to revert. I managed to complete just on time and was nervous until I finally saw "Congratulations" and PASS message appearing on the screen. No score or percentage would be shared. It will be either a "PASS" or "FAIL". Questions were very conceptual covering DEV 301 topics. DEV 301 MAPR course is sufficient to prepare for MCHD certifications. Do not miss or skip any topic. Pay attention to the core concepts, flows, JAVA code blocks, methods, classes, and examples shown in videos. Topic wise weightage can be found here. Overall it was a good learning experience. I got my certification :) Other useful links relating to MAPR: About MAPR Who is using MAPR? Why MAPR? With regards to the quiz that each chapter of 301 involve, are those helpful. Are they close to question in real certification exam. Are there any website, resources that might guide me to the kind of question that i expect in real exam ?

Yes, you can give a second or third attempt but will have to pay for each re-attempt.
